Hysterectomy, Not Just a Routine Intervention

Vaginal hysterectomy or laparoscopic hysterectomy is one of the most common non-obstetrical surgical interventions performed in women. Although it has a reputation of a routine procedure, it is in fact a serious operation that will result in the removal of usually all female reproductive organs: cervix, uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. Each one of these organs has a certain function that is terminated after the surgery. The cervix allows menstrual blood to pass through the vagina.  Ovaries produce hormones and eggs. Fallopian tubes serve to transport the eggs to the uterus. And the uterus is where the baby is placed during the pregnancy.

On of the most question abut hysterectomy is: “What are the hysterectomy side effects?” So, there are many hysterectomy side effects, but here are some of them: depression, low energy levels, low sex drive and thyroid deficiency.

With all of these organs and their functions listed, it becomes obvious how a vaginal hysterectomy/laparoscopic hysterectomy can have a significant impact on woman’s life. Because life doesn’t just go back to normal after a hysterectomy.

First hysterectomy side effect, if it included the removal of the ovaries, is a surgically induced menopause. It will commence right after the operation. A patient will be able to recognize this hysterectomy side effect by hot flashes, vaginal dryness, decreased libido, hair loss etc. If the ovaries weren’t removed, the patient will still experience some changes that can also be registered as hysterectomy side effects. There is a possibility that a woman may experience some looseness in her pelvic area. For all the symptoms that persist for a longer period of time or interfere with the regular lifestyle, women should address their physician, and ask for the advice.

The recovery period following the surgery can vary. The shortest recovery is expected for the patients that underwent laparoscopic hysterectomy or vaginal hysterectomy, in comparison to those who have had the abdominal hysterectomy. Also, the woman in a solid physical shape, with no additional health issues is more likely to have a faster recovery, than the one who had the operation to remove the cancer. A cancer patient will also have to have regular checkups and screenings as a form of prevention.

Since a postoperative depression is another hysterectomy side effect, it is vital to provide organized counseling and support for all the patients.
Woman should always try to use other treatments beside a hysterectomy is deal with some of the conditions and majority of women choose the surgery out of fear of cancer. A hysterectomy is the surefire way to ride the woman body of the cancer, if we consider the terms of the malignant cancer.
